The project is intended to bring together public and private partners in the interests of enhancing local and regional economic diversification. Specifically there has been demonstrated interest amount local and regional governments First Nations and private enterprise in expanding the facilities of the Cranbrook Airport in order to enhance the area's ability to respond to the growing regional national and international tourist demand for access to the attractions of the BC Rockies and its natural environs. The purpose of this application is to gain funding assistance to identify actions and requirements for enhancement of the Cranbrook Airport in order to improve capture of tourism demand for the attractions of the BC Rockies. Substantial potential exists in the area for economic diversification based on tourism as is evidenced by recent investment in regional recreation facilities. However existing air transportation infrastructure is inadequate to respond to the growing national and international demands for access to the BC Rockies and its natural environment.
