Funding to provide educators who would address specific parenting issues and to cover childcare costs thereby enabling the parents to attend. This would allow parents to focus on the subject at hand and the children to receive some quality time with their peers and signifcant adults who could model literacy activities. A small amount of funding will enable significant differences in the lives of these families. Parents are childrens' first and most important teachers this strategy will support parents in their role of parenting. Blueberry Creek Community School operates a family literacy/parenting centre in partnership with the School District #20 and Vancouver Foundation. This program serves families from Rossland to South Slocan and is the only program that is currently open five mornings per week. Parents have asked that a parent education component be incorporated to the centre which will incrementally build the program based on identified need by increasing both the hours of the program and the spectrum of support offered to families.
