The Green Heat Initiatives (GHI) Project will help people understand how woody biomass can be used to heat buildings beyond the residential sector. Rural and remote communities within the interior of BC are paying high prices for fuel to heat commercial institutional and municipal buildings. Often this fuel comes from distant locations resulting in few local benefits and financial leakage out of the communities. Communities are struggling to keep jobs in the community and to reduce overall operations cost. Wood biomass is a potential solution for many of these communities but it is not widely used to date. The GHI project seeks to raise awareness of biomass opportunities in communities. Specifically GHI will work with proponents to develop a minimum of 8 business cases for switching to biomass (in the interior of BC). GHI will build capacity within the interior of BC through education initiatives directed at those interested in biomass heating and the development of an accessible knowledge base. CBT funds will be used towards the costs associated with educating local municipalities institutions First Nations and non-profit groups on the use of biomass and the development of biomass projects; including but not limited to conducting community visits providing technical feasibility and financial assessments biomass source identification and documentation of projects.
